Cambridge and bicycles and classes and post-adolescent personal complications and the whole d*** thing are now wispy memories, like so much in Dilys' evolutionary trajectory, literally ages ago. But the Veritas enterprise soldiers on without us. Today and tomorrow, the venerated lecture halls and re-developed Harvard Square set the scene for a Blogging, Journalism, and Credibility Conference. It's sobering about the passage of time, this attention to a phenomenon unimaginable when that particular baffled cohort of 400 1L's scattered themselves through Langdell Hall.
Even though we're a perfectly good phoneme (or at least allophone) in the Word of the Year, Good&Happy, unlike the well-known verbal rocketry from Powerline, was unaccountably overlooked when invitations to dinner with Jeff Jarvis and Jay Rosen were being distributed. That's OK, the Vermont quail can be reprieved in favor of maybe harvesting some of the local Central Texas lawn-fed carne di cervo, con polenta.
But we'll be there for some of it, too, traveling via the Web, sans stiff hotel linens, airport searches, and recirculated meeting-room air [update: not to mention a 50+mph blizzard threatening the Northeast]. Face-to-face has its advantages, of course. But how good it is not to be limited to that barefoot walk beside the donkey cart to get some purchase on who's saying what.
As so often, invited or not, there we are in good company, on behalf of our (2? 3?) agog readers. We owe it to our public to pay attention to these developments, wouldn't you say, Dan?
Dan??
Update:
The conference has begun. Can't get on the IRC, must investigate the technicalities of realtime online comment. Audio stream only, not video. Jay Rosen is up Right Now. 9:28 a.m. Central Time.
